The CEO of the future has some excellent news. For the shareholders.
GOOBWAFFLE — How to Destroy the Human Race (And Market It as a Feature) is an AI-made satire I directed about the future of advertising. It follows five years of conference announcements, from 2027 to 2031, as progress gets increasingly difficult to distinguish from a very bad idea.
Animals become a new target audience. Cloning makes it possible to work at fifteen companies at once. A robot CEO has a rather efficient approach to staffing. By the time we reach the merger wars, corporate language has become alarmingly literal.
Everyone is taking this very seriously.
That is where the comedy lives. A keynote speaker who happens to be a cat still has ordinary cat problems. A room full of robots can be an extremely supportive audience. The world keeps getting stranger; the conference carries on as though everything is perfectly reasonable.
For me, the pleasure is in those small moments: a reaction, an awkward pause, the confidence with which a terrible idea is presented. AI gives the film its unlikely cast and expanding world. The characters, performances and comic timing give that world a reason to exist.
And after all the grand announcements, it comes down to a father trying to explain marketing to a robot child. Good luck with that.
